Home News & Events Young Writers Competition
We have had some wonderful news this week about our talented students across Year 8 all the way to Year 11. Once again some of our talented writers have won in the Young Writers Competition! This is our biggest achievement yet with 8 of our wonderful children being published for their short stories. The task this time was to write 100 words of the opening of a story under the theme of ‘Fright Club’. To be published is highly prestigious with schools all around the country entering to have the opportunity to have their work published. Only a select number of students can be published so for our amazing children this is a fantastic opportunity to have their voices heard and to have their hard work acknowledged. They have all been working so hard in English and we are immensely proud of them.
Here is a sneak peek from some of the students:
“I knew what I had to do. I had to get out. So, I kicked the tall one in the ankle and the others turned to see what had happened and I ran for it. My heart was racing, and I had adrenaline running through me. Where was Jamal? I couldn’t think about that now. I needed to run.”
“My head was spinning, and I could not see clearly now. The possibility I might be lost suddenly hit me. What if I never get out? I went to reach for my phone to call 999 but there was no signal. Of course there wasn’t. So I screamed and screamed and screamed”
“Then I saw it. I was panicking when I saw it. I can still see it now. The clown. Its face was one I now only see in my nightmares. It made my heart stop. I ran until I saw the main road before me. Just a few more steps: I could make it”
“It was the 12th of June 2015, when my class and teachers all went on a tour around a mental asylum. No one really knew why we were going on a tour. I thought it was a strange tour place. Anyway, let’s move on…”
“Somewhere, deep in an ice cave, it was cold and scary. Then I suddenly saw it. Something with gloomy red eyes. I scanned it while it was hiding in the dark with my pokescanner. It said that this pokemon is stuffed with kids’ spirits. Just as a let out a gasp it ran off into the dark”
“Suddenly, they heard the door slowly creek from behind them. Equally as slow, they turned to face it. Sure enough, it was open. Darkness spilled from the doorway, but no one was there. Who could have opened it? What was going on? They should turn back, shouldn’t they? They all looked at one another and went to approach the now opened door.”
If you would like to buy a copy of the book please go to the Young Writer’s website and look for the book ‘Fright Club – Echoes Of Fear’.
